# 3 - One Body

Romans 12:5, "In the same way, even though we are many individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other." (GW)

The analogy of the human body that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 12, best describes the way the body of Christ was meant to function. It is the smooth, co-operative and combined working of every part of the human body that makes it so incredible.

So also, in the Body of Christ, we may look different, hail from diverse backgrounds, have distinct callings and possess varied gifts. Nonetheless, having partaken of the one baptism, having the same Spirit of God at work in and through us, there is no place for disunity. Therefore, each one’s grief or joy should be shared by everyone else. One Body also implies that we complement, not compete with one other. This unity applies to every local church, and to the church at large.

That was the prayer of Jesus in John 17:21, “I pray that all of these people continue to have unity in the way that you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they may be united with us so that the world will believe that you have sent me.” (GW)

The Church Defined # 20 – Influencers Click here for the Audio Version -   Influencers Matthew 5:13 , “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” (ESV) Jesus’ analogy of salt was an extremely profound one. A huge jar of unused salt will benefit no one. However, even a little salt added to any dish will make a big difference to it’s taste. The presence of salt will not go unnoticed, so also it’s absence. If salt loses its saltiness it will become totally useless. Jesus referred to us as the ‘salt of the earth’ to help us understand that we the church are chosen to be a godly influence in this world. While we are happy to congregate as ‘salt’ somehow, we have failed to let this saltiness penetrate into every area of our lives and various spheres of society. The Church Defined # 19 – Disciple Makers Click here for the Audio Version: Disciple Makers Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (NKJV) The mandate to ‘make disciples’ of all nations, has to a large extent, become the Great Omission in the Great Commission. The directive of Jesus is not to make ‘converts’ but to make ‘disciples.’ According to Wikipedia, “A disciple in biblical terms is one who is a dedicated follower of Jesus. A disciple in the ancient biblical world actively imitated both the life and teaching of the master. It was a deliberate apprenticeship which made the fully formed disciple a living copy of the master.”   Luke records in Luke 6:12-16 , that Jesus prayed all night before He chose His twelve disciples.
